This mother earth symbol represents respect for Nature and ecology as the ancient female deity provided food and shelter to her inhabitants who worshipped her.
Spondylus limbatus, a red-purple or yellow-orange species, occurs from Baja California Sur to the Tumbes region in the north of Peru. They are often at least 30 meters below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Spondylus shells were more valuable than gold or silver for many Pre-Columbian cultures and a symbol of abundance and land fertility.
